SLCBC HERITAGE DAY FESTIVAL 2022

The Sierra Leonean Community of British Columbia (SLCBC) invites you to a Special Outdoor Edition of our Sixth Annual Sierra Leone Cultural Heritage Day celebrations festival on Saturday, August 27th, 2022, at Bear Creek Park, 13750 88 Avenue in Surrey, starting at 1:00 PM.

This special event will feature various cultural dancers, storytelling, the talking drum, musical performances, games, delicious African food & many more. This is an excellent opportunity to spend an evening with the larger African community and a platform to grow our roots, share our heritage, and histories in all forms and create a sense of belonging. Moreover, admission is FREE.

Your presence will be greatly appreciated and will help to emphasize the important message of community building, African unity and multiculturalism.

FEATURING:

Kara-Kata Afrobeat Society is one of the best live acts in BC. The internationally acclaimed band will headline this year's festival with riveting performances in a style deeply rooted in a blend of original Afrobeat, Reggae, Soca, Calypso, Funk, Jazz, Salsa, Blues and Pop. You will have a blast!

Ezra Kwizera is an international artist, music producer and community leader. Ezra’s music style is richly multi‐cultural – a zesty yet soulful mix of Reggae, Soca, East African Bongo, and Pop. With linguistic agility, Ezra fluidly sings and raps in English, Kinyarwanda, Luganda, Zulu and Swahili. Ezra's music conveys the spark of an overcomer and the passion of a community leader with a vision to inspire change in his generation. He currently lives in BC, Canada.

V-Love (Vincent Vorkpor) - This young budding Afro pop artist is talented, confident, and anything special – a rising star. His music is as refreshing, appealing and intriguing as his persona; dreamlike and mature but with a freshness that makes his fans quickly name him a favourite in Vancouver. 

Cultural Dance - A lineup of cultural and traditional dancers will wow you with eye-popping dance moves.

The Talking Drum - Some drums talk and can imitate speech. There are drums grouped in families to talk to each other. Experience the amazing wonder of the Talking Drum.

Storytelling - The aim of telling a story is to teach and simply to delight. A good story holds us captive. It stretches the limits of our imagination and allows us to marvel or wonder at something. This year, we will feature the internationally acclaimed, award-winning storyteller, Dr. Yabome Gilpin-Jackson, the curator of African identity.
